(NJ 4167 1442) Brough (NR) Fosse (NR)
OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1902)
A circular little fort on the summit of a narrow promontory. The fosse is almost defaced on the E by being filled up for cultivation. A stone wall marks the inner rim here, but elsewhere marks the outer rim. The fosse was well-defined within living memory.
Name Book 1866
The remains of a fort lie within a dry-stone plantation ring, in a commanding position on the end of a prominent ridge at c. 950' OD. It is circular on plan, measuring c. 32.0m in diameter, within walling c. 3.0m in width, exposed for a distance of 8.0m in the NE arc where a number of facing stones survive. The 'fosse' described by the Name Book may be an optical illusion created by the construction of the plantation bank - there appears to be no good reason for a ditch on the S and W where there are steep natural slopes. There is no evidence of a ditch to the N and E.
Resurveyed at 1:2500.
A fort, as described by previous OS field surveyor. The entrance is not evident.
Visited by OS (R L) 10 January 1972.
(Name cited as Glenkindie and classified as fort). This monument is situated on the end of a prominent ridge at an altitude of 280m OD.
NMRS, MS/712/46.
(Re-classified as enclosure). The remains of this enclosure are situated at the SW end of a spur 540m W of Glenkindie House (NJ41SW 16.00) and are surmounted by a thin cover of mature trees. The enclosure is roughly circular on plan and measures 33m in diameter from NE to SW by 32m transversely within a grass-grown bank up to 4m in thickness. For the most part the bank has been eroded to little more than an outer-facing scarp up to 1.8m in height, but in places it has a faintly discernible inner scarp rising no more than 0.2m above the level of the interior. On the E, the bank is overlain by the bank of an oval plantation which otherwise lies outwith the enclosure.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 29 April 1997.
Scheduled as Glenkindie House, enclosure.
