In Elgin Museum is part of an oak dug-out canoe found about 1886 in the Bog of Gight on the S side of Gordon Castle (NJ35NE 7.00).
Visited by OS (A A) 17 May 1971.
(Location formerly cited as NJ c. 350 595: amended to NJ 35 59). About 1886 a logboat was found in the Bog of Gight, an area of reclaimed marshland to the S of Gordon Castle at an altitude of about 20m OD. Although this discovery has been equated with the logboat that is in Elgin Museum, museum records indicate that the boat there displayed is that from Garmouth (NJ36SW 23). The Gordon Castle example was 'destroyed sometime at the Fochabers Stocks'.
Northern Scot 1916; R J C Mowat 1996.
MS. note by HB Mackintosh in Elgin Museum Scrapbook 2.
