Archaeology Notes

NH91SW 27 9469 1470

What may be a farmstead comprising three unroofed buildings is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet lix), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1973).

Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 10 July 1996

A farmstead, set in a hollow, was recorded during a pre-afforestation survey at Craig Pityoulish and Craiggowrie. The farmstead comprises three buildings lying to the E of a large enclosure with traces of further field-banks and clearance in the area. Two of the buildings measure 13m by 7m with 0.6m wide walls standing up to 0.3m in height, whilst the third measures 10m by 7m with walls of similar proportions. There are a number of clearance cairns in the general vicinity as well as a number of dykes some of which define a large agricultural enclosure

The dykes mapped during the present survey match those depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Invernesshire 1874, sheet lix).

Visited by T Holden and M Dalland (Headland Archaeology) 25 June 1999.
