Activities

Field Visit (26 March 2019)

Nothing can now be seen of the ‘sunken trench’ that contained the telephone and telegraph cables leading into the Naval battery which was introduced with the infrastructure by the Admiralty in World War I. It lay immediately E of the road running from the N gate (NH86NW 9.77) to the junction with the U1456 public road (NH 8196 6900 – NH 8179 6932) and its course is depicted on a sketch map of the battery entitled ‘Telephone Circuits’ held by the National Archives at Kew (ADM7/942), dated 7 May 1919. This also indicates that the Aerial Line continued N of this junction to Nigg Post Office, while the Aerial Telegraph headed W to Nigg Pier.

Visited by HES Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK) 26 March 2019.
