Field Visit (26 March 2019)
This building, which formed part of the camp introduced by the Army to sustain the battery during the Second World War, is situated 5m WSW of the N gate (NH86NW 9.77) providing access to the coastal battery and immediately NNW of the track leading from the North Sutor Land Service Battery Site No.1 to Site No.2 (NH86NW 9.48). It is rectangular on plan and measures 6.95m from ENE to WSW by 5.7m within grass-grown brick walls 0.2m thick and up to 0.1m high.
The building is annotated ‘R. C. of Signals Hut’ (Royal Corps of Signals Hut) on an undated sketch map entitled ‘Layout of Fort North Sutor’, within the Fort Record Book held in The National Archives at Kew (WO192/248). It is also depicted on two RAF aerial photographs (106G/RAF/0751/6039-40) flown on 31 August 1945, which also shows a short path leading from the track towards a central entrance.
Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK), 15/26 March 2019.
