Field Visit (19 February 2020)
This grass-, rush- and tree-grown platform, which is situated on a steep ENE-facing slope immediately NW of the gun battery, was excavated for the Admiralty in the First World War when the adjacent gun emplacement (NH86NW 11.8) was being constructed in 1913. It measures 14.5m from NW to SE by 9.5m transversely and is cut back into the slope to a depth of about 3m.
The platform is not shown on any of the plans of the battery in the Fort Record Book held in the National Archives at Kew (WO 78.5192). Although it is visually similar to a quarry, it is possible that it was excavated to provide a level place where the materials and equipment required in the construction of the emplacement could be stored.
