Archaeology Notes

NH69NE 11 centred 665 987.

At NH 6661 9877 and NH 6642 9871, on a S-facing hillside, are two hut circles (A and B respectively). Both huts are heather-covered and ill-preserved.

'A', on a slight rise, measures approximately 9.5m by 8.0m within a wall reduced to a rubble spread at most pronounced 2.0m broad and 0.2m high. The entrance is in the SE, on the line of the long axis.

'B', built up on and set back into the slope, is reduced to a platform measuring some 9.0m NW-SE by 8.0m. There are no other surviving details. Contemporary land use is denoted by a scatter of field clearance heaps on the down-slope S from hut 'A'.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (J M) 29 August 1980.

Activities

Desk Based Assessment (November 2002 - April 2003)

This report considers the likely effects on cultural heritage interests of the construction and operation of a proposed wind farm at Loch Buidhe on the Cambusmore Estate. The study, commissioned by Renewable Energy Systems Ltd (RES), was carried out as part of an Environmental Impact Assessment for the project.

Forty-one sites have been identified by the study within or within 100m of the proposed development area, using a range of desk sources, consultations and field study. Sixteen sites relate to prehistoric settlement and land-use, one, a crannog is of possible pre-historic origin with documented last occupation in the 16th century and twenty-four sites relats to medieval or later rural settlement. Seventeen of the sites are considered to be of Regional importance, twenty-three are of local importance and one site is considered to be of lesser importance. Additional buried sites or featues may still be present that have not been identified by desk-based research and field reconnaissance survey.
