Archaeology Notes

NG87NW 12 8102 7878.

At NG 8102 7878 about 375 ft OD, on the sheltered eastern slope of a hill above a small stream there are the remains of a hut circle. It is composed of large stones forming an inner and outer kerb with small stone infilling and measures 8.0m internally with walls 2.0m wide and an average height of 0.6m. The entrance which is in the S.E. measures 1.0m on the inside and 1.8m on the outer rim. In the vicinity of this hut circle there are also the amorphous remains of four oval structures, probably shielings, measuring 5.0m by 3.0m. In addition to these there are also several field banks and enclosures in the area which fall into three phases;- (a) those composed of large stones, now barely visible above ground level and probably contemporary with the hut circle; (b) relatively modern earth and stone banks 1.0m high by 1.3m. wide and (c) a modern drystone sheepfold about 1.2m high.

Visited by OS (R D) 6 April 1965; Visible on air photographs CPE/Scot/ UK 183: 1288-9.
