Archaeology Notes

NG62SW 55.04 NG 6436 2424 to 6220 2075 and 6207 2011

For bridge at NG 641 236, see NG62SW 55.05. For suggested winding engine house (at NG 6377 2299), see NG62SW 65.

This tramway has been traced alomg a sinuous course between NG 6436 2424 (where it reaches the New Pier, NG62SW 55.06) and NG c. 6246 2114 (where it bifurcates). From this latter point the short SW branch runs along the branch runs along the valley to the Kilbride cutting and polishing works at NG 6220 2075 (NG62SW 95) while the longer SE branch climbs to the lower quarries at NG 6207 2011 (NG62SW 55). The upper quarries at NG 6185 1979 (NG61NW 7.00) are said to have been connected to the system by a rope-worked incline, and a transportable railway system of narrower gauge may have operated within the quarries themselves. (MS/716/4). Information from Dr R Miket (Skye and Lochalsh District Council), September 1993.
