Archaeology Notes

ND39SW 72 centred 3124 9304

A barrage balloon anchorage point is situated immediately to the S of what was the garden enclosure of a now demolished building annotated 'Rafters' on the current chart copy edition of the OS 1:10000 map, (1976). The site consists of three concentric rings of mooring blocks, all with steel rings still attached, most of which were located on the date of visit and the central block and pulley ring. The winch-lorry stop blocks were also located in deep heather immediately to the S. The mooring point is visible on vertical air photographs (RAF LEU/UK 4, pt.1, 7025-7026, flown 1948).
