(ND 3148 9095) Green Hill (OE)

OS 6" map (1900)

The turf-covered mound rises to 7ft 9ins on the southern, landward, side, and to 30ft on the north side, the diff- erence being due to the slope of the ground. It contains the remains of a structure which may be a broch, from the general appearance of the site and the slight surface indications.

The remains cover an area of almost half an acre and seem to have been disturbed by random unrecorded excavations. There have been outbuildings to the east and south- east of the main work and along the high bank, above the shore, and on which lies a small kitchen-midden shell deposit.

RCAHMS 1946

Green Hill, the remains of a probable broch and outbuildings, as described by the Commission.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RL) 16 June 1967

Scheduled as 'Greenhill Broch, South Walls, Orkney... a tall, extensive, grass-covered mound on the northern shore of South Walls'.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 7 June 2004.

Activities

Field Visit (August 1987)

Green Hill ND 3149 9094 ND39SW 1

This broch mound, which adjoins the road 300m ENE of Longhope community hall, rises to a height of 9m above the shore, at a point where midden deposits are being destroyed by erosion. The long rough grass that covers the site during the summer precludes observation of the traces of outbuildings reported by RCAHMS.

RCAHMS 1989, visited August 1987.

ND39 1 GREEN HILL 3

ND/315910

Possible broch in Walls and Flotta on Hoy, a prominent turf-covered mound 9 m high close to the beach; midden deposits are being destroyed by the sea [3]. The mound is now featureless but there were traces of outbuildings on the east and SE (now obscured by grass [3]), as well as along the high bank above the shore.
