Archaeology Notes

NC96SE 84 9546 6383

A farmstead comprising four unroofed buildings, one of which is a long building, and two enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet ix). What may be five unroofed buildings are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1987).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 11 September 1995.

This farmstead, situated to the W of the Brackside Burn, was noted during a pre-afforestation survey of Sandside Estate. It comprises five buildings and two enclosures on either side of a dyke. Of the four buildings on an E to W alignment, two have three compartments and a third has two chambers. The fifth building, measuring 5m from N to S, has two compartments and is possibly a kiln barn with the corn-drying kiln in the S chamber.
