Archaeology Notes

NC80SE 16 878 020.

Preserved in Dunrobin Museum is an irregularly shaped slab of sandstone, measuring some 1ft 7ins by 1ft 4ins, on which appear three well-defined cup markings and one less distinct, with a diameter of about 2ins showing numerous dintinct tool-marks, and a number of smaller depressions about 3/4ins in diameter. On the left of the stone is a small group formed of one small central marking about 1/2ins in diameter, surrounded by six equidistant and almost contiguous marks, each of a similar diameter. The whole figure measures 1 3/4ins across. The stone was found at Uppat.

RCAHMS 1911.

The cup-marked stone is in Dunrobin Castle Museum; it is listed as having been found at the upper path near the junction with the carriage road to Uppat (NC 878 020). This may refer to Queens Drive, which is the only path to lead from the carriage drive to Uppat, but there is no local knowledge. There is an old quarry at the junction. Accession no: X112 Dunrobin Museum No.18 0.51m x 0.4m. x 0.11m thick.
