Archaeology Notes

NC76SW 84 c. 70250 60600

In 1985 a ground radar survey was conducted and the results were interpreted as possible evidence of Viking timber foundations.

A fieldwalking exercise was carried out in 2004 as it was thought that coastal erosion may have exposed the structure. Fieldwalking was undertaken at 2m intervals on a grid system, covering an area of 6400m2. The exercise did not produce any evidence, either structural or in terms of artefacts, to support the interpretation of a Viking structure.

Small pieces of worked flint and debitage were found, mainly around the high water line. It was also observed that small tussocks of vegetation appeared to be linear.

Reports and finds lodged with Highland SMR.
