Archaeology Notes

NB03NE 27 0836 3606

Perched on the steep slopes above Traigh Clibhe are the remains of a substantial roundhouse, now grassed over and punctured by two modern telegraph poles. This structure commands views over Traigh Clibhe to the N and down the glen of Loch Sgailler, to the S. This may represent the site of Dun Camus na Clibhe (see NB03NE 9).

I Armit 1994

What may be a hut-circle is situated on a narrow shelf on the steep hillside at Traigh na Clibhe. It measures 12m from NE to SW by 8m transversely over a wall faced with large stones, and has an entrance on the SSE. Telegraph poles on the NE and NW have disturbed its perimeter.

The location provided by a 'tomtom' Navigation-grade GPS is at NB 08392 36063, 30m E of the given location.

NB03 3 TRAIGH NA CLIBHE ('Dun Camus na Clibhe')

NB/0836 3606

This possible broch or roundhouse in Valtos was originally described as being “250 yards north-west of and below the school” [2] but no remains were seen at the spot in 1914. Ian Armit however discovered the remains of a substantial roundhouse about 500m to the south-east, just above the road junction [3]. The site stands on the steep slope above Traigh na Clibhe and has good views. The remains do not look substantial enough to be a broch unless the site has been heavily robbed.
