Archaeology Notes

HY41SW 135.08 centred 4408 1140

No evidence could be found in a field to the S of the A965 main road at Grainbank Cottage of what may be a small 'Z' battery of unrotating projectile (UP) mounts. The battery is visible on WW II RAF vertical air photographs (NLA 16, 615-616, flown 22 June 1941), as a group of at least nine launchers with five Nissen huts. In the field imemdiately to the SE is a large group of at leats 23 huts of varying sizes, which were most likely to have been additional accommodation for Hatston Airfield.

Two hut bases can be seen on vertical air photographs taken in 1987 (All Scotland Survey 06 87 303-304), located between two houses annotated 'Brodera'and 'Gair na Mara' on the OS 1:2500 scale digital maps.
