Archaeology Notes

HY22NE 6 2794 2568.

(HY 2794 2568) Knowe of Nesthouse Chambered Mound (NR)

OS 6" map, 1900

A mound occupying the whole of a small low-lying peninsula and containing a series of dry-built chambers, examined by Magnus Spence in September 1900.(M Spence 1903).

(It is probably an IA dwelling as the finds included iron implements, whetstones, mortars, stone lamps, pot lids and a large quantity of pottery of different types).

RCAHMS 1946.

The Knowe of Nesthouse, as described by the Commission, is so mutilated by quarrying and obscured by tumble that it cannot be positively classified but, as Miss Scott suggests, it is probably an Iron Age settlement similar in situation and construction to HY22NE 26, HY32SE 6, HY42SW 12, and ND39SW 5.

At its centre is a piece of walling c.3.0m long and 1.4m high, into which is built a rectangular alcove or cupboard, roofed with a flat stone 0.5m long, 0.4m high and 0.3m deep.

Visited by OS (NKB) 28 May 1967.

Scheduled as 'Knowe of Nesthouse, settlement... a large settlement mound, occupying the whole of a D-shaped promontory on the E shore of the Loch of Boardhouse. Two well-preserved chambers lie within the northern half of the mound which stands about 2m high.'

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 10 February 2003.
