A stone bearing a runic memorial inscription was found in August 1951, during the digging of a trench for a water-pipe, about 200 yds SE of the church (? 12th century church - HU33SE 2). It seems to be 11th century but may be earlier. It is 7 1/2 ins long and was forwarded to Lerwick.

M Olsen 1954; P Moar 1954

Mr. Jamieson (J D Jamieson, Papil, West Burra) indicated the findspot at HU 3698 3141. It is now in Lerwick Museum (Accession No. ACR 65860).

Site surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RL), 15 May 1968.
