Archaeology Notes

HU24SE 63 2719 4379

During the course of a coastal zone assessment survey a small enclosure, probably a sheepfold, was recorded lying 2m from the cliff edge on the Shalders Taing headland.

Oval in plan and measuring 6.5m N-S by 4 E-W, it is constructed mainly of turf with a stone interior face surviving to a height of 0.8m (6 courses).

A decaying earthen bank adjoins the enclosure and extends for a distance of around 40m inland.

No further archaeological intervention was recommended.

Sponsors: Historic Scotland and Shetland Amenity Trust

Information from EASE, December 1998, p. 161

A small oval enclosure with attached dyke is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Orkney and Shetland (Shetland), 1882, sheet LI) and on the current OS digital map tile.
