Activities

Archaeological Evaluation (February 2014)

Phase 1 results of an archaeological evaluation undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd (CFA) in February 2014 at the former Morrison Street car park, Edinburgh. Goods platforms/storage bins were targeted in Trenches 4, 6 and 7. In these trenches a range of concrete and stone surfaces were found often subdivided with wooden walls. This suggests that these areas were as thought track side storage areas with individual compartments seperated by what were probably disused wooden railway sleepers.

The disturbed remains of 2 buildings/structures were identified in Trench 1. From map evidence and the physical evidence these are early 20th century in date.

The evaluaion has further identified that apart from along the eastern edge of the site made ground deposits are greater than 3m deep and do not in themselves contain archaeological sensitive material.

Watching Brief (4 August 2020 - 14 October 2020)

NT 24190 73180 A watching brief was undertaken by CFA Archaeology. The area over the tunnels was considered to be archaeologically sterile as the tunnels had been constructed by the cut and cover method. Part of a small structure post dating 1947 in build was identified at the edge of the site on the modern day surface.
