Cowlairs Works, Carlisle St, built from 1842 for the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway and the North British Railway. A very large complex of workshops, stores and offices, forming the central locomotive, carriage and wagon works of both railways. The oldest parts, on the east of the site, were the light machine shop, a single storey ashlar building, 5 by 15 bay, the 2 bay old erecting shop and the former locomotive shed, a 7 by 8 bay structure. The new erecting shop was built in 1899 (£17, 800). Other late 19th century addtions were the brick carriage and wagon shops, with steel roof trusses, parts of the foundry and the two storey, 22 bay brick stores department (1897). Twentieth century addtions were made in corrugated iron and asbestos clad steel. Closed 1968 and demolished 1968-9.
