In 1862 a 'Canoe Paddle' was found (presumably during drainage operations) on the farm of Kirkbog near Closeburn and 'in a moss lying below a deposit of loam and gravel of about six feet (1.8m) in depth'. Kirkbog farm is situated on the haughland of the middle valley of the Nith at an altitude of about 50m OD, and the overlying deposit was possibly of riverine origin.

The paddle was not recorded in detail and does not appear to survive.
