(Centred NT 41086 69178) Ormiston was a planned village, created by John Cockburn of Ormiston Hall. It was laid out along the present Main Street, by Lewis Gordon, a civil engineer from London. Work started in 1735. However, the return from the village was insufficient, and Cockburn had to sell it to the Earl of Hopetoun in 1747.

The earlier village stood to the W, beside the mill by the river crossing.
