NS 895 540 (wind farm) and NS 935 545 (peat extraction and quarry)

The Blacklaw development site was assessed by ENTEC in 2002 for archaeological features, with a reassessment for the wind farm site in March 2004 (Stuart 2004). Much of the development area consists of rough grazing on blanket peat, and recent forestry plantations. A archaeological watching brief was undertaken between June 2004 and May 2005 during the extraction of deep blanket peat for the site quarry and of peat-stripped areas for the turbine foundations, tracks and roads. No new archaeological features were discovered. Two rectangular enclosures (NS85SE 57) were partly damaged by the development and these were investigated by excavation. They have been interpreted as the possible remains of animal pens. The watching brief for the wind turbines was affected by extreme operational conditions, due to a combination of poor weather, health and safety conditions and unstable ground conditions.

Archive deposited with NMRS. Reports have been deposited with the NMRS and in the area SMR (WoSAS).
