Viewfield, c.1790 remodelled, Alexander Ross, 1887 The handsome, three-by-two-bay Georgian house built for Lord Macdonald's factor is still visible to the right, although the fine first floor drawing room disappeared when it was transformed into Portree's grandest villa for Harry Macdonald, grandson of Dr Alexander Macleod (see p.372), who made his fortune planting indigo in India. Ross's additions for him included the crenellated tower with balustraded porte cochère and large drawing room wing.
