Excavation
NS 2530 8040 (centred on) Work continues on the site of a
WW1 army camp (DES 2017, 61) but the search continues
for “several stone coffins” reported in the OS Name Book.
No evidence of the ‘coffins’ has yet been found, but further
roadways and a stone-built drain of the camp have been
revealed by the work, which is within woodlands. The total
absence of military finds and comparison of the remains with
WD plans of the site are now indicating that the camp was
not completed as planned and was probably never occupied
by the army.
