Scope and Content John Nicolson and woman at Nybster broch, Caithness, Highland Nybster broch is located on a cliff promontory near the village of Auckengill in north-east Caithness. The broch can only be approached from one direction and is defended by a massive outer wall. Outbuildings fill the whole of the promontory. The site was excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) and John Nicolson (1843-1934) in 1895-6. This photograph shows Nicolson and an unknown woman standing beside 'Mervyn's Tower', a monument that he built with stone from the excavations. Nicolson was a keen sculptor and created many monuments across Caithness commemorating Barry's excavations. The original monument was built on the promontory and survives as a grassy mound. A replica was rebuilt in a new position. Nicolson often acted as a tour guide taking visitors to see the broch and monument at Nybster. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
