Scope and Content Largo Parish Church and Churchyard, Upper Largo, Fife, from south This view from the south, taken in 1979, shows the church, which is apparently on a medieval site. The east end (on the right) dates from 1623, and is vaulted. The tower and spire are of 1628, and the west end was built in 1816-17 to designs by Alexander Leslie. The parishes of Largo and Newburn were united in 1965, and the Gothic Newburn was converted into a dwelling house. The pulpit from Newburn is now in the Largo church, the interior of which was remodelled in 1965 to designs by L A L Rolland. Largo is in two sections. The lower town, with a rivermouth harbour was the port for a farming community, and became a burgh of barony in 1513. Upper Largo seems to have grown up round the church which served both burgh and parish, and, from the late 18th century, along the coast road. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
