Scope and Content Gravestone of Christian Trindle, Kenmore Parish Church and Churchyard, Perth & Kinross This gravestone features a large winged soul, its wings fitting the curved top of the stone perfectly. It represents the soul of the deceased ascending to Heaven after death. Below is carved a flowering plant in a pot, emblem of rebirth. The dividers and set square below are the trade emblems of a mason. The sides of the stone are carved with fluted pilasters. At the base of the stone are a row of death emblems and a ribbon inscribed: 'MEMEMTO MORI' (remember you must die). The winged souls which feature on the majority of Scottish gravestones vary enormously from place to place, and depending on the skill and imagination of the masons who made them. They represent an attempt to record in stone an image of the human spirit which transcends death. This gravestone commemorates Christian Trindle, who died in 1784. It is inscribed: 'HERE LYES INTERRED/THE BODY OF CHRISTIAN TRINDLE DAUGHTER OF/CHARLES TRINDLE OVER SEER AT TAYMOUTH/AND OF JANET MCLAREN HIS SPOUSE WHO DEPAR/TED THIS LIFE THE 7 OF MAY 1784 YEARS/AGE ONE YEAR'.
