Scope and Content 19th-century grave rails, Kilspindie Parish Church and Old Parish Church, Perth & Kinross This monument has retained its original cast-iron grave rails. These date from the 19th century and were used to define the area of the family plot in the graveyard, and to add an ornamental touch to the monument. The rails are decorated with a delicate stylised leaf pattern, divided by posts surmounted by iron pine cones, an ancient symbol of rebirth and fertility. This sort of intricate decorative ironwork was popular in Victorian times, when richness and layering of ornament was seen as a sign of wealth and culture. All sorts of designs were available, including many emblems seen on the gravestones themselves. A particularly fine set survive in Tarbet graveyard which feature draped urns and hourglasses with bat's wings. Grave rails like these are frequently removed as they rust away or are removed to make mowing churchyards easier. It is no longer possible to read the inscription on this monument due to the erosion of the stone surface. The simple curved shape of the top is typical of many similar monuments of the 19th century.
