Scope and Content Dormer window on Preston Tower, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph was taken in 1998, and shows a dormer window on the Preston Tower, at the south-east corner of the castle. The base of the tower dates from the 13th century, although this part, at the very top, dates from the 16th century. The carving on either side of the windows is finely detailed, and features leaves and flowers. The late 16th-century work on the castle was carried out by Alexander Seton (1555-1622) who was also responsible for the construction of a fine staircase inside the building. Fyvie Castle was purchased by The National Trust for Scotland in 1984. In 1986, a large restoration project was begun, which lasted for seven years. Before being bought by The Trust, six families had successively owned the castle, which was originally built as a royal fortress in the 13th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
