Scope and Content Threave Castle, Dumfries & Galloway, from east-south-east This view taken in 1972, shows the castle from the east-south-east. In front of the tower is the 15th-century artillery fortification, with its east corner turret. Note the gun loops in the turret and in the flanking walls, for use by hand-gunners. On the right is a replica drawbridge over the moat. This castle was designed as a power base. The artillery fortification was added probably in about 1450. The castle was taken by James II in 1455, after a siege, and in 1640 it resisted a siege by Covenanting forces. It was dismantled soon after, and was taken into State care in 1913. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, it is open to the public. Threave Castle is on an island in the River Dee, at one time navigable to this point. It was probably the site of a prehistoric settlement, and was chosen as the site of castle after 1369, when Archibald, 3rd Earl of Douglas, became Lord of Galloway.
