Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Leith Docks, City of Edinburgh Leith's complex of docks, warehouses and factories are shown in this aerial photograph, divided into two features annotated as A and B. Luftwaffe intelligence officers evidently were well aware of the layout of the area as the names of several docks, such as the Imperial, Albert, Edinburgh and Victoria docks, have been added to the photograph. At the extreme left of the photograph is Newhaven, annotated as 'Fischereihafen'. Although the Luftwaffe flew intelligence-gathering sorties throughout the war, the majority were flown in 1939 and 1940. In addition, the German national airline, Lufthansa, covertly took photographs across Britain in the years before the war while ostensibly surveying new routes for flights. Aerial reconnaissance photographs were used by Luftwaffe intelligence officers to identify new targets for bombing sorties, to assess the damage caused by earlier raids and to gather information about the strength of defences. Leith was photographed by the Luftwaffe in 1939 during an extensive aerial reconnaissance operation conducted in the first months of the war. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
