Scope and Content South Queensferry Harbour, Edinburgh This view from the south-south-west, taken in 1972, shows the harbour from its landward end, with the Forth Bridge in the background. The entrance is at the end of the pier on the right, protected by the L-plan west pier. The small size of the harbour is notable. This harbour was complemented in 1824 by the construction of a larger one to the west, known as Port Edgar. This was given a rail link in 1878, and during both World Wars was used by naval vessels. By the 1970s both harbours were used entirely by yacht owners. Queensferry is the southern terminal of the ancient ferry across the Forth to North Queensferry, but it was also for centuries a trading burgh for the western part of West Lothian. Until the railway reached the town in 1868 it relied largely on its harbour, which had been rebuilt in 1809-18, for much of its trade. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
