Scope and Content Banff Harbour, Quayside, Banff, Aberdeenshire This view from the south shows the three basins of which the harbour is composed. Judging by the masonry, it looks as though the pier in the foreground is pre-1770, and the basin beyond Smeaton's work. The outer breakwater pier, and the extension of the east pier, seem to be Telford's work. As can be seen, the harbour suffered from silting up, but it was used extensively until the late 19th century, both for trading and for fishing. It was then supplanted as a fishing port by Macduff, on the east side of the Deveron, Banff is now used mainly by pleasure craft. Banff was the county town of Banffshire, and the market town for a large area. It is at the mouth of the River Deveron, so had a natural harbour. This was improved in 1770-5 by John Smeaton, and much enlarged in 1818 by Thomas Telford, who created a new basin on the seaward side. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
