Scope and Content Shunting locomotive at Cardowan Colliery, North Lanarkshire This view, taken from the west-south-west in 1966, shows one of the locomotives used for shunting wagons at the colliery. The locomotive was built in 1898 by Gibb & Hogg, Airdrie. Note the wooden tender for extra supplies of coal, cut down from a typical coal wagon. This was the last surviving locomotive made by this maker, and the last existing Lanarkshire-built locomotive. It was placed in Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline, in 1968, and moved to Summerlee Heritage Park, Coatbridge, in the mid-1980s, being replaced by a locomotive built by Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co Ltd. Cardowan Colliery was sunk between 1924 and 1930 by Nimmo & Dunlop, with two shafts. A third shaft was sunk by the National Coal Board in the 1950s, with an overhead winding tower. It was, unusually in Scotland, a gassy pit, and methane was latterly drained from above the seam being worked. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
