Scope and Content Gravestone of Elizabeth Arbuthnot, Chapelton Burial Ground, Angus This gravestone features a curved top with a recessed panel showing a winged soul, with round face, hair or cap, and curving wings. This emblem symbolises the spirit of the deceased ascending to Heaven. The panel at the base of the stone carries a ribbon inscribed 'Memento Mori' (remember you must die), and various emblems of death, including an hourglass, skull and crossed bones. The lettering on this stone and several others within this churchyard, feature crisply-cut letters which alternate between capital and lower case. Some words also continue onto the next line. The mason has tried to make reading the stone clearer by inserting incised diamonds between each separate word, but the stone is still hard to decipher in places to modern eyes. The meaning of the phrase 'dIED OF A dECEIY' means 'died of a disease' in the Scots dialect of the time. This monument commemorates Elizabeth Arbuthnot, who died in 1704. It is inscribed: 'MRS ELIZAbETh ARbUTH/NOT SISTER GERMAN TO THE PRESENT LAIRD OF FIN/dOURIE DIED OF A dECEIY AB/OUT THE 18 YEAR OF hER/AGE A BEUTYFUL VIRTU/OUS AND RELIGIOUS YOU/NG LADY & WAS hERE INT/ERREd SOME YEARS BEF/ORE hER MOTHERS dEATH MEMENTO MORI'.
