Scope and Content Tolbooth, High Street, Dysart, Fife, from north-east This view from the north-east, taken in 1979, shows the tower in the centre, with its mid-18th-century belfry, and part of the 1885 block to its right. The gable to the left is part of a range of housing rebuilt from an 18th-century vernacular range in 1976. The interior of the tower is vaulted on the lower three floors, which are the original 1576 building. The complex served a wide range of purposes, including a council chamber, prison, public weigh house and guard house. There are two bells in the belfry, one dated 1808, the other late medieval. This building is in two sections. The tower is the older part, dating from 1576, with the upper part of the tower and the belfry rebuilt in 1743-4. The rest of the building, to the south-west, was completely rebuilt in 1885 to designs by Campbell, Douglas & Sellars. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
