Scope and Content Upper Bowling Basin, Forth & Clyde Canal, West Dunbartonshire, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the lower basin at Bowling, with the Custom House in the background. To its right is the swing bridge carrying the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway over the canal, and to the left is the chimney of the hydraulic pumping station providing power for the bridge. The canal was bought in 1867 by the Caledonian Railway. In the 1890s that company's subsidiary, the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway, was constructed, with a swing bridge (seen here) across the canal at Bowling. This involved altering the basin here, with a new concrete-walled upper basin. The Forth & Clyde Canal was built between 1768 and 1790 to take sea-going vessels across central Scotland, avoiding the long and hazardous voyage round the north of Scotland. The section from Maryhill to Bowling was built between 1786 and 1790, and designed by Robert Whitworth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
