Scope and Content Gravestone of Margaret Lindsay, Chapelton Burial Ground, Angus This gravestone features a winged soul within a recessed panel at the top of the stone. This represents the spirit of the deceased ascending to Heaven after death. The bottom of the stone bears a ribbon inscribed: 'Memento Mori' which means 'remember you must die'. Just visible at the base of the monument are a row of crossed bones, a skull, coffin and hourglass, further emblems of death'. The lettering on this stone is notable for its ligatures or 'run-together' letters, for example the T and E in the word 'After' on the fifth line down. Words frequently run from line to line on many monuments, and in this case small incised diamonds are used to distinguish between each word. This stone is especially interesting for its inscription describing the deceased two marriages. This gravestone commemorates Margaret Lindsay, who died in 1714. It is inscribed: 'MRS MARGARET LINDSAY DAUGHTER/TO SIR ALEXANDER LINDS/AY OF EVLIE KFIRT MARRIED TO/THE LAIRD OF FINDOURY/AND ThEREAFTER/TO JAMES/PIERSON OF BALMAdIES TO/WhOM ShE BORE SEVEN SO/NS ShE DIED AbOUT ThE 56/YEAR OF HER AGE ON THE 11 OR/12 OF MAY 1714 AnD HERE INT/ERREd ON THE 18 A VITUEUS/ANd RELIGIOUS LAdY/MEMENTO MORI'.
