Scope and Content Iron ore terminal, General Terminus Quay, Glasgow, from north-west This view from the north-west, taken in 1979, from Stobcross Quay shows the three ore-unloading cranes, with an empty ore-carrier to the left. The ore was discharged by grabs on to belt conveyors and taken to the building in the background, which contained storage hoppers, from which railway wagons were filled. By 1979 it had become uneconomic to import ore in vessels of the size that could be handled at General Terminus, as seen here. A new deep-water ore-importing facility had been completed at Hunterston, and replaced the plant at General Terminus, which was subsequently demolished. General Terminus was built in the 1840s as the first part of Glasgow Harbour served by a mainline railway. It was designed for coal traffic, both for bunkering steamships, and for coastal shipment and export. In 1957 it was equipped for importing iron ore in bulk for use at Ravenscraig and Clyde Iron Works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
