Scope and Content Town Pier, North Queensferry, Fife, from south-south-east This view from the south-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the Town Pier, the main ferry pier until the construction of branch railways on both sides in the 1870s. The pier as seen here dates from about 1810 when it was rebuilt, probably to designs by Robert Stevenson. This ferry pier was supplanted in the 1930s when car ferries were introduced on the crossing, using a ramp at the railway pier. This ferry service ended in 1964 when the Forth Road Bridge opened. In the 1990s the Town Pier came back into use by boats bringing passengers to the Deep Sea World aquarium. North Queensferry is, as the name suggests, the northern terminus of an ancient crossing of the Forth Estuary at its narrowest point. Because of the tide race through the narrows the crossing could be difficult, and several landing points were provided on either side. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
