Scope and Content Pier Station, Balloch, West Dunbartonshire This shows the station from the north, with the track layout as simplified when the line was electrified in 1960. The steamer berth is behind the viewpoint. As can be seen, the wooden platform building is supported on timber piles driven into the bed of the loch. Until about 1950 there were two steamers operating on the loch. In 1953 the survivor, the 'Prince Edward' was replaced by the 'Maid of the Loch', which was still operating in 1971. She was withdrawn in the mid-1970s, but still survives, berthed at this pier, and is being restored. The station has been demolished. This facility was built in 1896 by the Dumbarton & Balloch Joint Line Committee, a partnership between the North British and Caledonian Railways, which shared the line between Dumbarton and Balloch. It was an interchange point between trains and the Committee's steamers on Loch Lomond. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
