Scope and Content Scotstoun Shipbuilding Yard, No 903 South Street, Glasgow This shows the western part of the South Street frontage of the yard, all of which was very functional. The large sheds in the distance are the platers' sheds. The berths are at an angle, behind these non-committal buildings. When Upper Clyde Shipbuilders failed in 1971 the Scotstoun yard was, like what was left of the Linthouse yard, a sacrificial victim. The Scotstoun yard was officially mothballed, but once the heat was out of the situation it was quietly dismantled. The best of the cranes went to the Fairfield (Govan) yard. This yard was founded in 1861 by Charles Connell. It was very successful in building sailing ships, and then steamships of moderate size. It became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968, and was the most efficient merchant shipbuilding yard in that combine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
