Scope and Content Waverley Station, Edinburgh This shows part of the roof of the west end of the station from the south, with the North Bridge on the right. The longitudinal roof in the foreground covers the suburban platforms, and the 'ridge and furrow' roofs cover the main station, whose overall height was curbed by legislation. The building in the background was the North British Hotel, built as a station hotel in conjunction with the rebuilt Waverley Station. The hotel was built between 1895 and 1902, and designed by W Hamilton Beattie, architect. It is now known as the Balmoral Hotel. The first station on this site was opened in 1846, and was joint between the Edinburgh & Glasgow and North British Railways. After the latter absorbed the former in 1865 the station was rebuilt, and it was again reconstructed between 1892 and 1902, when the North and Waverley Bridges were also replaced.
