Scope and Content Crabbie's Green Ginger Factory, Nos 100-24 Great Junction Street, Edinburgh This shows the complex from the south-west. The five-storeyed block of bonded warehouses on the corner dates from the late 19th century, but the section on the left with the hoist doors is earlier, as are the three-storeyed ranges to right and left. Crabbie's Green Ginger was a ginger wine made by fermenting imported raisins, then flavouring the fermented liquor with ginger and other spices. It continued to be made here until the early 1990s. The buildings seen here have since been converted to other uses. This complex seems to have had its origin in the Yardheads whisky distillery, founded in 1825, which lasted until 1884, latterly under the ownership of Bernard & Co. It then passed into the hands of John Crabbie & Co, who used it for whisky blending, and for the making of Crabbie's Green Ginger. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
