Scope and Content Harbour and Piers, Mallaig, Highland This shows fishing boats in the harbour, which is formed by the steamer pier, part of which is seen here, and by a timber-faced quay (also seen here) and pier. These boats are used for inshore fishing for white fish using seine nets. Until the early 1960s the catch was taken to market by rail. These boats were typical of the west-coast fleet, built with Government assistance after World War II, and distinguished from the bulk of the East Coast fleet in having varnished, rather than painted, hulls. This type of boat has now all but disappeared. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. It was built to provide a rail-linked terminus for steamer services to the Outer Isles, and to encourage the fishing industry, and a harbour was built as part of the scheme.
