Scope and Content Threshing machine, Wester Kittochside Farm, South Lanarkshire Wester Kittochside Farm is a rare example of a farm whose buildings span three centuries of agricultural change from the late 18th-century improvement period to modern times. Recent developments, however, have hardly touched it and the farm, gifted to The National Trust for Scotland in 1992 and now supporting the Museum of Scottish Country Life, is rare in having such intact examples of original buildings. This shows the 1860 threshing machine still in situ in the threshing barn. It is a roller-feed fixed mill made by McCartney & Drummond of Cumnock, wright and cast iron maker. The gear drive from the horse engine is to the right next to the wall while the long arm on the left is the blower and duct which separates grain and chaff (husks). The big drum in the foreground is the threshing drum with cast-iron feed rolls in front of it. Below this is the riddle case which 'dresses' the threshed grain. This machine would have been superseded in the 1870s by travelling mills, which dressed and graded the grain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
