Scope and Content Barn, Mains of Applecross Farm, Applecross, Highland, from south-west Mains of Applecross Farm is a late 18th- to mid-19th-century steading with three notable vernacular barns incorporating wattle and heather thatch and showing strong Hebridean influences in their walling. The steading was formerly called Borrodale and is situated close to the mid-18th-century Applecross House, built for the Mackenzies of Applecross. This mid-19th-century barn flanks the farm square. It was used as a hay and threshing barn and is viewed here from the south-west. It is built of rubble and has large louvred vents, to allow air to circulate through the barn, and assist the drying of hay. Note the single-storeyed, whitewashed stable attached to the west elevation (left). Despite being more sophisticated in design and more sheltered, this later barn was said to be less effective as a ventilated store than the earlier 'top barns'. Inside the barn is a series of six rung racks or frames, through which poles could be slotted and on which hay/corn could dry on the draft provided by the wattled/louvred openings.
