Scope and Content Pond and dam from south-east, Tormore Distillery, Highland Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. It was designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson, a past president of the Royal Academy and completed in 1960. In 1972 the number of stills was increased from four to eight, and it continues to produce spirit for the 'Long John' blends. This shows the pond and dam which supply water to the distillery. A platform and benches surrounded by ornamental railings can be seen left, which are part of the landscaped grounds. A good supply of fresh water is vital to the efficiency of a distillery, and the quality of the water can contribute to the taste of the finished whisky. Jim McBain, the gardener at Tormore, would each year catch the brown trout which lived in the distillery pond and carry them up into the hills to release them in the burn. By the time the pond had been cleaned the fish would have made their way down once more. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
